Learning About Quality

At Vaughn Carpentry, quality and craftsmanship always come first. I grew up helping my dad with his carpentry work. While he was a talented carpenter, he also emphasized the importance of doing things right. Not only doing things right with the carpentry work, but also in life and for the customer. I try to bring that quality to the table with every project. That means not cutting corners and sometimes making the extra effort to make sure the work is done right and looks beautiful. On a deck, that starts with the footings and goes all the way up to the caps on top of the railing. Fortunately for me, I love my work, I love building decks, I love working with my wife and I love taking that picture of the project when its finished.

I started my career in carpentry work 15 years ago framing houses. Framing houses always meant also building the deck, which was the day I looked forward to the most. The satisfaction for me was even greater on that day, because not only did I get to build a sound structure that people could enjoy, but I also knew that my work wasn’t going to get covered up by the siding, drywall and shingles; everyone was going to get to see it and be able to enjoy it! In 2016 I made the transition from framing full time, to designing and building custom decks. I’ve never looked back. Helping homeowners get the high quality outdoor space that they want is truly enjoyable. And with so many great decking and railing products available today, homeowners can really get exactly what they are looking for.

When my wife and I were dating, she told me her dream job was to work with her husband. Of course, this was understandable because she grew up working hard on a dairy farm, watching her parents work together every day. Unfortunately, I had to tell her that I wasn’t sure how that would work, because I didn’t feel framing houses was the safest place for my wife to work. But as they say, where there is a will, there is a way. ..

When I started designing and building decks, opportunity knocked. Emily said, “I can come help you now.” She was right. It’s been a wonderful blessing working with my dear wife these past years.
